Chapter One
Haven Sidney took a sip of her whiskey and coke, watching the people around her. The Wild One was packed tonight, and the riding bull had a line
She had decided to give her mom and new stepfather a few hours alone, since they had just tied the knot with a Justice of the Peace in their living room. After the few guests had left, she hugged her mom, Paris, and her new husband Flint Stang, informing them she’d be back late, and that it was time for her to explore her new town’s nightlife
Now dressed in her favorite light blue jeans and black boots, Haven sat at the small table waiting for the band to start. At the age of 25, she loved to listen to live music and dance, but it had been a long time since she had felt it was safe enough to do so. Even before she had stepped out of the house, her mother had grabbed her tight and hugged her.
“Be careful, Haven. We might be hundred of miles away, but you never know who’s out there,” her mother had whispered to her.
“Mom, I’ll be fine, but I think you should tell your husband what’s going on so he’ll know if someone comes snooping around,” Haven said before Flint showed up out of nowhere. Haven did have to admit that for an older man, Flint was a hot one. He was tall, with dark hair that was cut to shoulder length, and Haven swore he had grayish blue eyes that seemed to penetrate right through you if he turned his attention on you.
“Don’t worry Haven. Your mother told me everything before we were married. But we will be having a long talk about her timing, that’s for sure. I know you want to go out, so I suggest The Wild One. You’ll be safe there and it has a live band. Your mom informed me you love to dance, and from what I’ve heard the band is pretty good.” He leaned down and kissed her cheek.
“And I want you to come home anytime you want. Don’t think you have to stay out late to please us. Plus, we won’t be here,” Flint said, earning a squeal from her mom.
“What? I thought we agreed to do nothing big?” Paris frowned at her husband.
“Did you really believe we wouldn’t have a honeymoon? I have a jet waiting. We will only be gone for three days. But, if you need us for anything, the number is already programed into your phone, along with my sons Cody’s and Landon’s. numbers. They don’t live here but have their own place about ten miles away and can be here fast if you sense anything wrong.” he had told her, knowing that she and her mother were blood suckers.
Haven snorted and took another sip of her drink. The whisky wouldn’t make her drunk, but it would get her blood warm and give her enough courage to dance when the music started since she was in a new place and town, Catalina, Arizona.
So far nothing felt off. Two years, eight months, three weeks and two days ago their lives had been shattered. Her father had been murdered right in front of her eyes and now the Reynolds family was searching for Paris and her.
It had taken half of their money, and the confidence of the few people they had trusted, to slip away from Torrance, California without a trace. They now had new names and appearances, and she hated that she’d had to cut her long blond hair and dye it red. But, Haven did have to admit the auburn color was nice, just too bad her hair wasn’t long. Instead it was shoulder length, styled almost as a page boy.
Not only that but the one job she had loved, working with handicapped children, was gone. Haven couldn’t use her license, knowing they’d find her in a second. Her mother had no problem finding a different job, since had never worked, but Haven had cried on her last day. Even right now tears threated to come thinking about little Billy, the one boy who was finally making progress with her help.
Sensing someone staring at her, Haven lifted her head and scanned around the room till her eyes fell on the band that had emerged from the back. Her heart stopped, palms got sweaty, and Haven swore she could smell the outside, fresh wind blowing around her.
Holly fuck-berries, she was staring at her mate…mates? She moaned. Inside, her other stirred, rising. Both, she purred. Not only were the two men almost identical, but Haven swore they were carbon copies of her stepfather, Flint, and from the look in their gaze they’d just realized what she was too. “Well fuck-berries,” she mumbled, and gulped down her drink, staring at them. They had their father’s eyes, and she could see Flint in the way they held themselves and the thickness of their hair, not to mention their size. She peeked at each of them as they worked at setting up the equipment on stage.
She was so going to bite her new stepfather. He’d set her up, but was this a bad thing? Getting up, Haven made her way to the bar and ordered another drink. She was about to turn around when one of the cowboys next to her lifted his hat and winked at her.
“Can I buy you a drink, pretty lady?” he asked, his gaze traveling down her body and lingering on her breast for a few minutes.
A beer was slammed down on the bar in front of the guy, making them both jump. “Back off, Doug. She’s off limits on Stang’s order.”
“What?” Haven grit her teeth together.
* * *
Landon Stang watched every move their mate made and the fact that Doug was hitting on what was theirs had him growling. Once he and his brother had seen their beautiful stepsister, Haven, they had known it wasn’t a coincidence their father had married Paris so quickly. Five years had been long enough for any man to morn, especially since their father was still in his prime.
“I think I’m going have to show Doug again who runs this little group,” he turned to see his brother glaring at the same man.
“It appears our father has already informed everyone to keep away from her. Max has never bitten the head off one of ours in a long time,” Cody nodded towards the bar, as Haven walked away, shaking her head.
“After the first set we’ll introduce ourselves to our woman,” he told his brother.
“She is stunning. Dad said she likes to dance.” Cody frowned. “I don’t know if I want anyone watching her.”
“Let’s see how our Little Dancer moves and if she even likes our music,” Landon said, picking up his guitar and starting to tune it, all the while keeping an eye on the crowd around them. The need to protect her was fierce.
His father had informed them about Paris and Haven’s duel identities, and the murder of her father. He had explained that they both needed to stay hidden from their clan since someone was now looking to take out the rest of the family since they
had disposed of the father. Even the thought of her in danger had him on edge tonight.
Standing and moving to the mic, Landon introduced the band. “Good evening and welcome to The Wild One. My name is Landon Stang, on lead guitar, my little brother, Cody, is on bass. Our best friend Turtle is on Sax, and on drums is Thor. Now, let’s get this place jumping, so my father, owner of this place, can hear it in the skies.”
By the fifth song he’d had enough and called for a break. Not only had Haven’s dancing caused every male in the club to take notice, but a few of them had actually tried to corral their woman with moves on the dance floor and that was really pissing him off.
The stallion in him needed to rut with his female in the worst way, marking her as his. “Come, let’s corner our filly, before I destroy half of this bar.” Landon placed his guitar on its stand and jumped off the stage, followed by his brother when the their usual evening’s entertainment, the Boxen twins, stepped in front of them.
“So, where would you like us tonight? In the storage room, your office, or you know we haven’t tried it in your truck yet,” Dolly almost purred, rubbing her cheek against Landon’s chest as she jumped up, wrapping her legs around him, hugging him. Glancing to the left of him, Landon could see that his brother was having the same problem.
But when he checked to see where their mate was, she was gone.
“Bucking horse,” his brother said, prying Sara off of him. “There will be no more. We’re off the market, ladies. We’ve found our filly. Excuse us.”
Lifting and setting Dolly to the side, he stalked toward their woman as she hopped onto the mechanical riding machine.
“Let it go,” she yelled, earning shouts and whistles from the crowd.
“I’m going to hunt down every single asshole here,” his brother snapped, glaring at the men that seemed to come out of the woodwork just to watch their mate.”
Chapter Two
Haven had heard everything the twins had said, and even her mate’s furious growls, but she’d ignored them. She wouldn’t admit seeing them hanging all over her men hadn’t hurt. But Haven was here to unwind, not to claim two men. It had been a while since she had ridden the metal bull and now was the perfect time. Haven had the cowboy behind the controls start slow, so she could get used to the machine, before waving her on.
One thing was for sure, the corset Haven had chosen tonight was not the best choice to wear while ridding the bull. She was just getting used to the bull when the machine stopped suddenly. Sure enough, the lead singer, Landon, now stood behind the controls. The other guy she had spoken with was flat on his ass, laughing like a hyena.
She went to jump off to give the guy a piece of her mind, when brother number two lifted her up, carrying her away from the machine.
“Put me down,” she growled, ignoring the fact the man smelled so damn good she could have rolled all over him like a dog in heat. “Who the hell do you think you are?” Haven went to jump out of his arms, when he flipped her over his shoulder without breaking his stride, heading towards the back from what she could see upside down.
“Hush, before I spank that cute butt that has been wiggling all over our dance floor this whole night,” he growled and then his hand landed on her ass, shocking the crap out of her.
“You know damn well who we are and what we are to you, but you still go out of your way to show off what is ours,” the lead guitar player, Landon, said coming up next to them.
Haven lifted herself up and glared at the man. “First, I have claimed shit. Second, even though I don’t have to explain myself to you or anyone, this is the first time in over two years I’ve stepped foot into a damn club and you’re telling me I can’t enjoy myself?” Her voice squeaked and it usually only did this when her blood was burning. “Third, I’m claimed by no one, however it’s apparent you two are. So, let me the fuck down now and go claim the Bobbsey twins over there.”
Using everything she had in her, Haven twisted on Cody’s shoulder and jumped free of the both of them, but in doing so Haven also ended up bumping into two men, and spilling their beers. “Sorry, go to the bar and order two more on me,” she said, watching and waiting for Cody’s and Landon’s next move.
But what Haven was not expecting were the assholes behind her to get all bent out of shape. A man had never taken a swing at her, but it would seem there was an expectation here as she ducked as a fist came flying towards her from the back.
“Shit,” she mumbled and glared at the man who missed. What she wasn’t expecting was Cody to go all bat shit on the man, while Landon reached out and pulled her to his side.
“Do not move,” he ordered.
“But I could stop this. I didn’t mean to bump into him,” Haven said, frowning as Cody knocked the man down to the ground.
“You ever take a swing at our woman again and there will be no warning,” Cody growled. “Now get the hell out of here, because if I see you tonight, I’m not going to hold back and either will my brother.”
The man glanced at Cody, then at Landon, before his gaze slid to her, but Landon stepped in front of her. “You don’t need to be looking at my mate,” he snarled and Haven could have sworn she saw some kind of hair coming out of his skin.
The man jumped up and moved backwards, away from the brothers, faster than Haven had seen a man ever move, and that included her kind. The fear in the man’s eyes as she stepped up to Landon’s side made her look up at the man that claimed her. What she saw had even her wondering what the hell these men were.
Oh, Haven knew there were other species and had met a few, but the brothers were way off the charts as far as she knew. “Okay, what the hell are you two? I know I’m a blood sucker, but you two? I’ve never seen eyes like yours.”
Those glowing orange eyes turned to stare down at her. “There is no need to fear us. We would never hurt you, Little Filly,” Landon reached up and ran a finger down her cheek. “But we are very jealous men and the thought of anyone watching you dance or ridding a bull…” he growled.
“Let’s just say without our claim we will be very dangerous to those around us, especially the male population,” Landon told her. “Come, we need to talk in private, away from ears that bud into people’s business.” He held out his hand waiting, putting everything back in her court.
She sighed, slipping her hand into his. “You know my life is really screwed up, right? I really don’t think letting this thing go any further would be smart,” she mumbled as Cody and Landon lead her into the back of the bar, passing a few offices to the last door in the hall.
Cody reached around her and pushed the door open. She stepped into one of the biggest offices she had ever seen. Two couches, a small kitchen off to the one side and a king size bed…
“Ewww, you really need to get rid of that out of here.” She nodded to the bed. “Are the couches safe, or have you fucked on them too?” she frowned, looking around.
Cody went over and rolled the office chair over. “Sit, we’ll have everything removed tomorrow and you can pick what you think would look good in here.”
“I’m not a damn dog,” Haven growled, but sniffed the chair before sitting down, glaring at the two men who sat down in front of her on the large coffee table which would be going too if she took them up on the offer. Even sitting in the office smelling like filth had her stomach in knots. “This isn’t going to work,” she frowned, and put her hand over her nose.
* * *
Landon frowned seeing the stress on her face as she looked around. “You really can smell others?” he asked her. He knew their kind could had a very sensitive nose, but even he couldn’t smell the other women they had brought into their office.
“Yes,” she said not taking her hand away from her mouth. “We also have a very sensitive, whatever you call it.” Haven looked down at the ground. “When my father was killed there was so much blood. Now it’s hard for me to even feed, because I keep smelling him and reliving…”
Landon got up
and lifted her up, taking her seat, and placing her on his lap. “I’m sorry, Little Filly. You’ve been though so much. Father informed us about what happened. Do you really believe that they could still be looking for you two?” he asked.
“I know they are. I have friends and they keep me informed with what is going on. Dean Reynolds is furious they can’t find us. He’s killed two people he’s sent out. I didn’t let mom know, but I’m scared we’ll run into someone that could report back to them.” She looked up at him. “I tried to warn your father, but he wouldn’t hear of it. Said he’d take care of us, but my father said the same thing a week before the take-over happened.”
Haven shook her head and glanced over at Cody. “If something happens to your father, my mother won’t survive. I didn’t think she was going to last until she noticed your father. It was like a light came back on in her eyes.”
“Do you really believe your father will be able to take on a clan, especially one who does not care if he does not fight fair? We’re talking over 200,” she asked them.
“Yes,” both Landon and his brother answered.
“But tell me, if we were to confront this Reynolds man, aren’t there some still in the clan that would fight for you and your mother?” Landon asked, but she was already shaking her head.
“Nope, they left or were eventually killed. Dean made sure each one that stayed was true to him, taking a blood oath from each one.” She tilted her head. “It’s why we shouldn’t even think of this between us. I wouldn’t say this in front of my mom, but we have death breathing down our necks. Soon, he’ll capture us both and drag us out of this world into the next.”
“Not if you are lassoed and tied to our side,” Landon growled. “Sorry darling, but we’re not letting you go. The question is do we really need to get the lasso out and hog tie you to our side?”
“I was afraid of that. Now tell me why you believe you can stop them? What are you?” she asked.
